Singapore Workfare Income Supplement Update: Increased Support With Annual Payouts Rising Up to S$4,900

Singapore’s Workfare Income Supplement program helps low-income workers by adding money to their salaries & CPF accounts. From 2025 onwards the maximum yearly payment will increase significantly & could reach S$4900 for older workers. These changes come at a good time because wages are going up but the cost of living remains a concern. The updates will help around 500,000 workers plan for retirement by giving them both cash payments and CPF contributions.

What Is the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS)?

The Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) is a government support scheme designed to reward eligible Singapore citizens who remain employed. The payout is provided partly in cash and partly as contributions to the Central Provident Fund (CPF), with the exact mix depending on a worker’s age and monthly income. Beyond financial support, WIS encourages continuous employment, skills upgrading, and long-term retirement savings. Eligible employees receive WIS automatically without the need to apply.

Key Enhancements Starting From 2025

From 1 January 2025, the Workfare Income Supplement will see a major enhancement, including an increase of around 17% in the maximum annual payout nationwide. Older workers will benefit the most from this revision. At the same time, the monthly income ceiling will rise to S$3,000, allowing more workers with higher wages to qualify under the scheme.

Who Qualifies for Workfare Income Supplement?

To qualify for WIS, you must be a Singapore citizen aged 30 and above, or any age if you are a person with disabilities. Your average monthly income must not exceed S$3,000 from 2025 onwards, and you must be actively employed. Employees receive payments automatically, while self-employed persons must declare their income and make MediSave contributions to remain eligible.

How WIS Payouts Are Calculated

The amount you receive under WIS depends on your average monthly earnings, age group, and number of months worked during the year. Older workers and those with consistent employment typically receive higher supplements. A portion of the payout is credited in cash to support daily expenses, while the remaining amount goes into CPF to strengthen retirement savings.

Maximum Annual Payouts Comparison

The enhanced scheme increases the maximum annual WIS payouts for employees, especially those in older age brackets. These improvements ensure that lower-wage workers continue to receive meaningful support as wage levels rise.

When Will You Receive Your WIS Payments?

Payments for work completed in 2025 will generally be distributed in 2026. Depending on your work arrangement, payouts may be made quarterly or annually. Beneficiaries will be notified through SMS or official letters. Linking your PayNow-NRIC to your bank account allows for faster receipt of cash payments.

Extra Benefits for Self-Employed Persons

Self-employed individuals receive approximately two-thirds of the maximum amount given to employees. While the payout is lower, the 2025 enhancements still represent a significant increase. Making regular MediSave contributions is essential to qualify for the full benefit.

Why These WIS Changes Matter

The 2025 enhancements ensure that Workfare remains relevant as incomes increase, improves retirement preparedness, and complements skills training incentives. With annual payouts of up to S$4,900, the enhanced Workfare Income Supplement provides stronger financial security for lower-wage workers in Singapore.
